Extension Varieties of Tensors

Let be a symmetric tensor of order in variables that we want to decompose, and let be its rank. An extension variety parametrises the lifts of the tensor to a larger space, while keeping the rank unchanged. The lift can increase the order, by considering the space of tensors of order (a degree extension), or the number of variables, by considering the space of tensors in variables (a dimension extension). The motivation is that a decomposition which is hard to find for , may become accessible from a suitable lift.

Let be an algebraically closed field of characteristic , the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree in , identified with the symmetric tensors of order , and with the polynomials of degree at most . We look for

with minimal. After a generic change of coordinates and scaling we may assume that , so that

Thanks to apolarity, corresponds to a functional with , where is the coefficient of in , and finding a decomposition of is equivalent to finding a decomposition of the dual element

Let

where

An extension of corresponds to an element such that and its Hankel operator has the same rank . A degree extension corresponds to , , and a dimension extension to , .

Hankel operators and extensions

To any we associate the Hankel operator , , where . Its kernel is an ideal, is Gorenstein, and . We know the first terms of , namely the moments for , and we look for the remaining ones.

Fix a set of monomials connected to , i.e. each is or with . Put .

We consider the formal Hankel matrix

where and a new unknown otherwise, and, when , the formal multiplication matrices

The constraints on the unknown moments come from commutation [BCMT, Thm. 4.2]: there exists an extension with and a basis of if and only if and

and then is unique. This is a polynomial system of degree at most in the unknown moments. An equivalent description asks that all the minors of vanish.

Since , the points of are given by the common eigenvectors of the multiplication-by- operators , whose eigenvalues are the coordinates of the points. If the joint eigenvalues are distinct points, then is radical, and the weights are obtained from the linear system on . Otherwise, it gives a generalized additive decomposition of length [BMT].

A dimension extension lifts to a tensor in variables, by the same principle: we look for on with and , and the extension variety is the set of all such .
